“ Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.” Phil. 2:4
In 1972 Brother Kenneth Southwell was led of the Lord and strongly convicted because he believed in his heart that Texas needed a Mission Development similar to the one that was operating in Oklahoma. He recommended this program to Rocky Springs Baptist where he was pastor. They voted to sponsor a Texas Mission Development and recommended it to the Missionary Baptist churches of Texas. He visited Texas churches inviting them to be a part of a program that would help supply finances needed for land or buildings for missions and struggling churches in Texas. Brother Southwell was excited, Rocky Springs Baptist of Dialville was excited and as they gained supporters they were more excited. TMD was not about making Brother Southwell or Rocky Springs church happy. It was all about easing the financial loads of newly planted churches and small struggling churches.. Since July 1972 God has blessed this effort with supporting members who have made it possible for the Texas Mission Development program to give nearly 2 million dollars helping missions and struggling churches in the MBA of Texas with their financial needs.
I became director of TMD in 1991. I got excited when a record quarter TMD check in the amount of $10,000.00 was presented in August of 1991. I began to appeal to our churches for more supporters. I would beg, cry, , kick, holler, and slobber, sing and maybe even dance a little trying to get support. Each time we had a record quarterly offering I would do an end zone dance. But folks it is not about making me happy. It’s about doing the mission work of helping newly planted churches and struggling churches with their building and land needs.
This year, 2012 is our “40th Anniversary”. Our First Quarter Project is the Pine Springs Camp in Laneville, TX. This Camp has been used by most all the churches of Texas since 1973. The camp is in much need of repair and renovation which began last year before camp season. There is still very much work to be done. Texas Mission Builders has been working continuously to do what they can with the monies available.
Here is my appeal of all appeals. Please, brothers and sisters of Texas please consider sending a special offering to Texas Mission Development between now and May 1st. If not a regular supporter a one time support will do. Let’s celebrate TMD’s 40th Anniversary with a check to Eastside Baptist of Jacksonville, TX for Pine Springs Camp with a record amount of $40,000.00. Even if I am not up to it, I will jump, cry, slobber, kick, holler and maybe even dance a little when the check is presented.
We owe this to our Texas Campers. The camp is worthy to be updated and repaired. Just think, more souls are saved at Pine Springs camp each year than in all our Texas churches combined. To God be the Glory! We all give thanks to Mission Builders for their faithful help with the renovation and repair at our Texas camp.
“ONLY 40 THOUSAND, ONLY 40 THOUSAND, THAT’S OUR GOAL FOR TMD, ONLY 40 THOUSAND!”
God bless you all,
Jim Slocumb - Director
